Challenge Two Fern and Cardboard Shelters

Here we go again! Building shelters.
This time we had some ferns from Mrs Grant's garden and we had to try and make a shelter with a strong roof and it had to be big enough to fit one of us inside or under it.
We decided to use some of the playground equipment for support and we went to the top of the field where there were lots of climbing poles.
First we divided into groups and drew a plan. We could use cardboard and string, but not cellotape.
The wind made our challenge more difficult because the ferns were blowing around, but most of us all managed to work together and build a shelter. Some groups joined together and that worked well.
Mrs Grant thought we were very CREATIVE because all our shelters looked different.

Innovation topic - Building a Shelter Challenge

Our challenge was to build a shelter that had a roof strong enough to hold a carpet mat and big enough to fit a person in.
We could use newspaper, paper, cellotape and string.
Some children drew plans and some didn't.
Some shelters were successful and some weren't, but we all enjoyed the challenge and could think of how we might build a better shelter next time.

The 'Inside' Garden Party

Space 13 have enjoyed reading lots of Margaret Mahy books and stories. Margaret Mahy loved telling and writing stories and usually wore a coloured wig when she read her work to children.
Sadly she died this year aged 76.
After reading the Garden Party book we made hats, fairy bread and crackles to have our own garden party. However the weather decided that we were going to have our garden party INSIDE.
So here we are before we enjoyed our food.

Swimming Fun at the Aquatic Centre

Space 13 had a fantastic, fun, learning time at Swimsation.
Look at the different activities we enjoyed.

Sporty Space 13

Space 13 has over half the class playing school or weekend sports.
We think this is fantastic and Mrs Grant has never had so many children in her class who play so much sport.

Bryly, Jacob and Ngawai were away for the photo but they also play weekend sport.

All these sporty children received their sports certificates at our special Sports assembly.

Harmony, Cody and Ashton received special trophies for their great playing and sportsmanship during the season. Congratulations.

Reading Activities

READING  ACTIVITIES

Pink, Green and Orange reading groups have produced reading activities based on the book they read as a group.

The Pink group read a book called Spider's Web. They made dioramas out of paper, joined them together and decerated them. They also retold the story in their own words and wrote each part under the dioramas.

Green group read a book called It's A Frog's Life. We had to find facts and write them onto our Frog's Life Fact Wheel. You can spin the top wheel and read each fact on the bottom wheel.
We read a book called Honey Bees. We found facts and wrote these in our own words. We coloured our honey comb and made bees. I think we did a great job. Well done Orange group.

Our Change experiments and activities

Our major topic this term has been CHANGE.
We have had heaps of fun doing lots of experiments, making , watching, talking and thinking about what we have done.
Can you see the jelly and the popcorn we made, the invisible writing we tried, the butter we made from cream, the ice cream ingredients, the hokey pokey that showed us how geothermal activity changes and the car ramps we enjoyed building?

Jayden's Titanic Art

Jayden is very interested in the Titanic ship. He enjoys drawing detailed pencil sketches of the ship as it began to sink. Here is one drawing he would like to share.

Kawaha Point Cross Country

Space 13 all persevered and finished the school Cross Country course.
Kia kaha, kia maia Space 13.
Layne enjoyed his time at the cross country and would like to share his day at the event.
                                    CROSS COUNTRY

      RUN.  RUN.  RUN.

Today was Cross Country.  I was nervous at
    first.
When it was our turn they said, "on your
     mark get set, go."
It was fun. I was tired so I stopped.
Even though I didn't come first, I still
      tried.
                           Kia manawanui, Layne

Kawaha Point Cross Country
Cody also had a great time and will share his day at the event.

ZOOM! Today, June 6th, it was Cross Country.
I versed the 8 year olds. We raced at the Reserve.
“On your marks, get set.” CLAP!!
I started a bit slow but I sped up very quickly in to 6th place.
    Yay!  I passed one kid.
    Yay!  I passed another kid.
    “Wow! I can’t believe that I’m in 4th place.”
One lap and I was tired out, but I kept on going.
    I passed two more kids.
“Awesome, two places!   I’m on fire!  Ow, I’ve got the stitch big time."
    YAY! I came second.
I feel more awesome than EVER.

                                                              Kia kaha, Cody

Congratulations Kevin. You are an artist.

Thursday, February 23, 2012

Space 13 are great writers. We have been using adjectives and similes to make our writing more interesting for someone else to read.
Please enjoy reading about Ngawai’s kitten.

My Kitten
My kitten’s name is Mallow.
She has bright blue eyes, white and grey fur and furry feet. Her nose is like my pink, pearl bracelet.
Her whiskers are as strong as rulers.
Mallow likes to eat the brown cat biscuits and the meaty, gluey, brown, soggy wet dog and cat roll.
I think my cat is special to me because she is a playful cat and she likes cuddles. I know that she is playful because every time you wriggle your fingers she chases them and when she gets your fingers, she bites and scratches your hands. It doesn’t hurt. It tickles.
She sleeps like a new born baby.
